Backyard BBQ Tips: What to Do With Stale Beer

2020 is over, most people are vaccinated, and the rules and regulations are being lifted a bit more every day. With the summer ahead of us this means only one thing…plenty of backyard BBQ time! Truly one of my favorite parts of summer, if not the entire year, is calling up some friends, heading over to Perrottis Quality Meats, and packing a bunch of coolers for a backyard BBQ!

But if you are anything like me, I’m sure you are more than familiar with the disaster that will need to be cleaned the following morning. Scrubbing dried BBQ sauce and collecting flat, half-drank beers lining your porch (shame shame!) in the heat — no thank you! Before you go to dump the bottles out on the lawn, think again. There actually are some pretty cool ulterior uses for all that leftover golden nectar!

The Best Uses for Stale Beer

-Stain Remover-
Did you know you can remove stains with stale beer? Now, keep in mind I’m not telling you to dump a stout on your carpet after you drop your coffee, but a light lager and some elbow grease will definitely help. You can also take a clean cloth and use some of that stale beer on a wood table to help restore it. Just make sure to clean it off after it sets for a few minutes…unless you’re okay with ants invading your space.

-Insect Repellent-
Speaking of ants, one of my coworkers was just telling me how his mother would fill a cake pan with beer and set it in the garden to attract and kill the slugs and other critters that were lurking around their tomatoes. You wouldn’t think it, but mosquitos also love the opportunity for a cold one. All you have to do is fill up a bucket and set it just far enough from your table to keep them distracted and away from your backyard BBQ.

-Hair Conditioner (Seriously!)-
This last one is going to sound like I’m setting you up for disaster, but I promise it’s a good idea.  Because of the B vitamins and natural sugars in beer, it is a great way to add some shine to your hair.
One thing: opt for a relatively newer beer as opposed to the old one that has been sitting out all night. So, the next time you decide to crank some tunes and crack a cold one in the shower just tilt your head back and pour a bit out. Let it sit for a while and wash out like you normally would. Just remember to save some for sipping! And please use a can not a bottle.

Don’t Fret About the Aftermath of Your Backyard BBQ with These Tips!
I hope this helps with your summer cookout cleanups this year! As much as we hate to see the wasted beer (blasphemy!), it is the hard reality of any backyard BBQ. As for dealing with all the left behind, “passed off” brews that you find hidden in your cooler…well, that’s for another blog.
Quick reminder: Nothing kills a party more than running out of cold ones. Be sure to stock up now!
Cheers! Stay safe.
