Vignobles Mayard Description

"The entirely tank-matured 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape Clos du Calvaire is an open, flattering effort that boasts impressive complexity. Peppery spices mark the nose, alongside notes of mixed berries, leather and garrigue, while the full-bodied palate is expansive and velvety. Hints of leather join star anise and black cherries on the finish. It's a strong effort, which should drink well for at least 6-7 years."

"A blend from various terroirs of the appellation, Clos du Calvaire is unpretentious—a pure expression of a true Châteauneuf du Pape, aged in concrete vat to preserve the authenticity of its predominant grape variety, Grenache. This is a fine traditional wine with an aroma of red berries and an intense liquorice bouquet, elegantly structured, full-bodied and rich on the palate. A great value in the wonderfully fresh 2018 vintage. With a dynamic history and an eye toward the future, the Vignobles Mayard is putting out naturally farmed wines with finesse, class and a freshness and lift that elude so many of today’s Châteuneuf-du-Pape."

Jeb Dunnuck: 92 Points

The young vine cuvée from this terrific estate is the 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape Clos Du Calvaire, a blend of mostly Grenache with 15% Syrah and small amounts of Mourvèdre and other permitted varieties. Brought up all in concrete tanks, it offers a classic perfume of sweet red and black fruits, candied flowers, licorice, and peppery garrigue. Plush, medium to full-bodied, seamless, and incredibly silky on the palate, it's just a rocking little fruit bomb that's going to dish out loads of pleasure over the coming decade.<!--more-->Classic, elegant wines emerge from sisters Francoise and Beatrice Mayard and despite plenty of upfront appeal, their wines age beautifully. The winemaking here includes partial destemming and aging mostly in concrete tanks and older foudre. (Drink between 2019-2029)

Vinous: 90-91 Points

Brilliant ruby-red. Ripe red and blue fruit scents are sharpened by building spice and mineral flourishes. Sappy, broad and alluringly sweet, offering palate-coating boysenberry and cherry cola flavors that slowly firm up on the back half. Floral and spice notes build on the clinging finish, which is framed by smooth, well-knit tannins.
